POETICALLY EXHAUSTED, VERTICALLY ALONE
- the story of José Bação Leal -

- OFFICIAL SELECTION OF DOCLISBOA 2007 -

SYNOPSIS

José Bação Leal has born in Lisbon, capital of Portugal, in 1942, and died in Mozambique, during the colonial war, with
23 years old. A promising writer and thinker, he became a symbol of a youth that could not rise, victim of a country that put in cause its own future in a meaningless war.
All the people who were close to him were touch by his fascinating personality and his vanguardist free spirit. In 1971, the well known Portuguese writer Urbano Tavares Rodrigues prefaces the posthumous book of the author, edited by the friends and the father, in this way: “This book will survive in its testimonial value as a historical mark, summarizing the agony and the martyrdom of so many young men broken in their nature and their options due the contingences of History. Besides, this book makes us coexist with a man who could had been one of the most important Portuguese writes of our time, if his live wasn’t been taken by the cruelty and insanity he denounces. We are before an extraordinary and passionate document of conscience, which for been rigorously located, results more universal”.
“Poetically Exhausted, Vertically Alone” wants to gives a portrait of this fascinating figure, through the places he had been, the testimonies of its close friends, the quality of his texts, having always the historical context as background.
